Digital Evidence Decision Training
Operation Broken Signal
Navigate four critical decision points as a digital forensics investigator.
Scenario Briefing
A joint federal and local task force, composed of municipal police investigators, sheriff investigators, a deputy U.S. Marshal, a probation/parole officer, and an assigned assistant prosecutor, is tracking Marcus Hall. Hall is a convicted felon on active probation with a fourth-waiver search condition. He is currently wanted on a federal felony warrant issued by the U.S. Marshals for firearms trafficking and interstate flight.
Task force intelligence places Hall inside a suburban rental home leased under a fake name. Hall is suspected of coordinating armed drop-offs using encrypted messaging applications, a router-based surveillance network, and remote smart home monitoring systems. As the team breaches and clears the house, Hall jumps from a second-story window and flees on foot into a nearby greenbelt, leaving the house unsecured and packed with active digital devices.
As each investigator enters the scene, they face four critical operational decision points involving digital evidence triage, legal authority, and scene management. Each decision point requires the team to apply proper forensic handling protocols consistent with best practices taught in the Digital Evidence Overview training.
